Antarcticland is an Italian micronation which functions as a commercial degree and title mill.
It purports to be the legitimate government of the wedge-shaped section of Antarctica extending from the South Pole to 60° S latitude between longitudes 90° W and 135° W, and to have been founded in 1821 as a secret "order of ancient knights" by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen.
Von Bellighsausen is generally credited as the discoverer of the Antarctic continent - the mainland of which his Russian-sponsored polar expedition first sighted on 28 January 1820. However, there is no record of him founding any order of knights - Antarctic or otherwise - nor is there any documentary record of Antarcticland itself prior to the publication of its website in 2007.
Among other things, the website asserts that Antarcticland's knights "patrol [its] territories" during the summer months, that its population numbers 1.3 million, and that the indigenous Selk’Nam people of Patagonia are a remnant population of ancient "ice people" who migrated from Antarctica to their present home at an unspecified date in prehistory.
These obvious fictions suggest that Antarcticland is a deliberate hoax.
