The Federated Republics of A1 is a micronation based in the Melbourne suburb of Balwyn North.
It was created as the Most Glorious People's Republic of A1 on 1 January 2008 by Philip Mallis (born 1992), and is named for the Balwyn High School classroom in which it was first conceived. A1's name was changed to its current configuration on 4 November 2010.
The micronation has at various times maintained symbolic territorial pretensions of up to 0.7 km2 in extent to parts of the suburb of Balwyn North, however none of its members have possessed either legal title to or exclusive use of those areas. According to a November 2011 forum post by Mallis, A1 maintains additional symbolic territorial pretensions of unspecified extent at unspecified locations in Death Valley, California, Solo and Yogjakarta, Indonesia and western metropolitan Sydney, Australia.[1]
As at November 2011 A1 is essentially an imaginative political simulation in which mundane interactions between Phillip Mallis and his associates are fictionalised and incorporated into an ongoing narrative - primarily via the medium of online micronation discussion forums and social media sites.
Mallis, who was the 2010 Young Citizen of the Year for the Melbourne municipality of Boroondara, is also known as the founder of Twenty4 Community Media, a not-for-profit youth community organisation which publishes The Sutton, a local community newsletter.[2]
