The Imperial Commonwealth of the Imperium of Dewaco Estates is a micronation created by Dennis Corbett (born 1953 ?), a Vietnam veteran, retired farmer and paintball supplies retailer who resides in Trenton, Missouri, USA.
It was founded in the early 2000s as an online fantasy realm named the Imperial Commonwealth of Dewaconia. The website for Dewaconia states "this country is a make-believe country on a make-believe world". [1]
In 2005, Corbett began making regular contributions to a number of online micronation discussion forums, initially using the pseudonym "The Lord Imperator"[2] and later, "CommiCzar".[3] At this time he began publicly asserting that the now-renamed Imperium of Dewaco Estates had in fact existed for over fifty years, and was a physical micronation whose territories were made up of all the lands owned and leased by family-owned agribusinesses in Missouri, Kansas and Iowa, of which he was at that time the chief executive.
In reality there is no evidence that Dewaco was founded during Corbett's childhood, and almost no physical or documentary evidence of its contemporary existence and supposed activities. According to the Dewaco website, the latter include "wars" and "raids" directed against other micronations in various parts of the world, hosting and attending micronation "summits" and "state visits" in various parts of the world, and conducting various "campaigns" of a charitable, educational, financial or operational nature; in the absence of credible evidence to the contrary, it must be assumed that nearly all such activities are either partly or wholly fictional - or else that they are based on mundane family and business activities - re-imagined as though they were intrinsic to Dewaco. Physical artefacts created for purposes directly linked to Dewaco are similarly elusive, consisting of several Dewaco-themed street signs installed on internal roadways on the Corbett properties in 2009 and 2010, and several generic sporting trophies adapted for use as Dewaco awards during the mid-2000s.
In December 2009 Corbett retired from his role as head of the family businesses,[4] and no longer plays an active role in their operations. As at January 2011 he resides at 200 East Crowder Road, near the centre of Trenton; this address - along with a number of nearby family-owned residential properties situated on Mable and Lulu Streets - serves at the site of Dewaco's designated capital, Imperia.
The name Dewaco is believed to be derived from Waco, the Texas town that was the site of a 1993 armed confrontation between the followers of religious cult leader David Koresh, and agents of the US Federal Government.
