The Kingdom of Kerguelon was a micronation created by Lawrence Walter Callaghan (born 1969), a United States citizen residing initially in Arizona, and later in Central America.
Its territorial pretensions encompassed the entirety of the 7215 km2 Kerguelen Archipelago in the south Indian Ocean; the area is in fact a district of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (French: Terres australes et antarctiques françaises); the Kerguelen islands were annexed by France in 1893, and have had the status of a French overseas territory since 1955. The area has no indigenous population, but is the site of a number of French scientific and naval facilities that are permanently maintained by between 50 to 100 personnel.
Callaghan's activities came to public attention in April 2006 when he faced court in Managua on charges relating to the sale of fraudulent documents - namely passports and driver's licences purportedly issued by the Kingdom of Kerguelon - to European and North American would-be emigres to Nicaragua.
