The Snake Hill Principality is an Australian micronation founded in 2003 by Finnish-born Paul Josvein Jensen (Prince Paul) and Helena Marjut Jensen (Princess Helena), and their daughter, Paula Jensen (Crown Princess Paula), in consequence of a mortgage foreclosure dispute.
As the joint mortgagees of units 18 and 22 in the apartment building located at 56 Speed Street, Liverpool, in south west metropolitan Sydney, the three were defendants in a case brought against them in the Supreme Court of New South Wales by LKM Capital Limited (ACN 091 379 930), trading as Law & Milne Mortgages, in February 2000, in which it was alleged that they had "not paid any amount to the Plaintiff since 11 May 1999", and were consequently in default of their mortgage contract in the amount of $112,119.05 (Australian Dollars). The court ruled in favour of the mortgage company, and the Jensens lost the properties.
According to the plenary address given by Paula Jensen at the PoliNation conference on micronations in Sydney on 17 April 2010, the family were devastated by this outcome, which they came to view as a conspiracy perpetrated against them by unscrupulous legal practitioners, and hence a gross denial of natural justice.
In fear of the possible loss under similar circumstances of several other properties over which they yet retained ownership, the Jensens then allegedly determined that the only available recourse was to excise those properties from the jurisdiction of the New South Wales courts by seceding from the Commonwealth of Australia.
As at April 2010, Snake Hill's territories consist of an undeveloped 1.22 km2 acre rural acreage 45 kilometres from the town of Mudgee, New South Wales, and a private residence in the northwestern Sydney suburb of Castle Hill.
