The concept of sabotage is derived from the French word sabot and means, “to trample with wooden shoes”. A sabot is a wooden shoe with a leather upper. During the introduction of mechanized agriculture, French farm workers would throw their sabotes into the harvesting and processing machines (which were replacing them) in order to block the scythe and threshing mechanisms and disable them. For the sake of their labor, they engaged in sabotage. In 1992, with this namesake and a vision of system-independent free and open spaces, Robert Jelinek created an interface between fine arts, performance, actionism, conceptual art and art in public spaces, which was also active from 1994 as an international art and music label (Sabotage Recordings), collective and organization (Sabotage Communications), and since 2003, has existed as an artistic consequence and continuation of this ideology in the form of an independent state. On August 30, 2003, the State of Sabotage (SoS) was founded as an art-hybrid on the uninhabited island of Harakka, Finland with the unveiling of the “Sabotage” sculpture by H.R. Giger. SoS has its own constitution and is recognized as a state by the United Nations in terms of human rights. Yet it has no clearly defined territory, but rather several culturally inhabited provinces. The SoS currency has been submitted to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Since 2004, SoS has maintained embassies in fourteen nations and diplomatic relations with several other states. The SoS Art Collection continues to be expanded, as do collaborations with internationally renowned artists. SoS is committed to civic values such as education, culture, and civil liberties in their best sense and traverses state sovereignty via artistic means.
