Wirtland
From Lomwiki, the micronation encyclopaedia
Wirtland is a micronation founded by Cris Luegno, a native of Bulgaria, as an experiment in non-territorial sovereignty.
Wirtland claims to be the world's first internet-based sovereign country. The same claim was made by the Republic of Lomar during the late 1990s. However, on 18 January 2010, the Wirtland blog announced that the micronation was seeking to purchase territory from the Pacific island nation of Nauru. A further blog post on 1 April, announcing the impending acquisition of territory in Sweden and quoting Swedish Foreign Minister Teo Zetterman on the subject, is presumed to be an April Fool's joke.
Wirtland's activities are largely conducted online, via such social networking sites as Facebook, Twitter and Linked In, although in July 2009 it released a gold bullion coin - the "Crane" - designed and marketed by noted US coin designer Daniel Carr. This was followed by the release of a silver bullion Crane in September 2009. Both coins are denominated in "International Currency Units". As at June 2010 the only other projection of Wirtland into the corporeal world is the plastic identity card available to its members.
